December 13, 1937 - May 25, 2021
Delvia (Del) Lucia Alsina passed away peacefully on May 25, 2021 at Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Alpharetta, GA, following a sudden illness. She was 83 years old. The family wishes to thank the entire team at North Fulton, especially the Critical Care Unit staff for their caring professionalism and comfort during Delvia’s last days. Delvia was born Delvia Lucia delaCruz in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on December 13, 1937, and grew up in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, where she met her future husband John Alsina. She was the daughter of Luis delaCruz and Margot delaCruz who both predeceased her. Delvia was a loving and supportive mother to her four daughters and grandmother to six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren (with one on the way). We take joy in the fact that her last healthy day was a fun family event on May 8th 2021, when we celebrated Mother’s Day. Delvia was a good friend to many in Warwick, NY where the family resided for many years. She was a long-time and distinguished employee of The Warwick Savings Bank until her retirement in 2000 when she moved to Douglasville, GA to enjoy the warmer climate. Del was well known as an ‘equator baby’ among her New York friends, so she was happy to enjoy warmer days in her later years. In addition to being the loving matriarch of Casa De Alsina, Del always found ways to establish her own identity outside of motherhood. She was an independent woman who cheered for the NY Giants and Atlanta Falcons and cursed any rival team (especially Patriots and Eagles). She also loved popular music that spanned multiple generations (1940’s to present), spy novels and ‘true crime’ TV shows. Del loved the company of friends so it’s no surprise she quickly made friends in Douglasville following her retirement. She volunteered at the Douglasville Public Library and Woodie Fite Senior Center, where she was awarded The 2017 Volunteer of the Year award. Although she was proud of her Hispanic heritage, Delvia loved all things Irish, including one of her favorite holidays, St. Patrick’s Day. That is the one time each year she would forgo her usual purple attire in place of an all-green outfit, from her socks to her earrings, of which she had many to choose from. Delvia also loved to dance and enjoyed the company of friends and family alike. If there was ever a party, Del would be among the first people on the dance floor. She is survived by her daughters Jeanne Kwederis, Valerie LeCroy, Dina Doty and Linda Oleszczuk; grandchildren Mark Doty Jr., Stephanie LeBlanc, Evan Doty, Hailey Oleszczuk, Justin Doty and Kathryn Oleszczuk; in addition to her great-grandchildren and her many cousins. Please note a Memorial Mass is planned for 2:00pm, Friday May 28th at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 4401 Prestley Mill Rd., Douglasville, GA 30135 followed by a Celebration of Life reception at 4:00pm located at Hunter Park Community Center, 8830 Gurley Rd., Douglasville, GA 30134. The family requests that in honor of Delvia’s sunny personality, attendees wear purple, green or other bright colors for the service. Also, we encourage all friends to share any memorable stories or photos by emailing [email protected] In addition, a memorial service will be planned in the Warwick NY area to be announced at a later date. Please email [email protected] if you would like to receive additional details.
