October 12, 1931 - March 3, 2021
Lamar, age 89, known to his Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren as Pop, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at Seasons Hospice care in Cumming. He was born on October 12th, 1931 to Walter Odell Holbrook and Corine (Bryant) Holbrook. He was raised as a member of the Longstreet Baptist Church as his father was the secretary there for many years. In his later life, he enjoyed attending Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Hickory Flat. Lamar was drafted into the Korean War in 1951 where he served as a Marine MP and Amphibious tank driver after completing boot camp at Paris Island. He was sent to Korea and served out his tour and Honorably Discharged in 1953. Upon his return he worked at the General Motor factory on the production line. He then took a job with Southern Bell as the phone installer for both Roswell and Alpharetta. Progressing in positions along with the growth of the area and company he retired as an Engineer at the Marietta Office. He was never much for sitting around and immediately became employed at Volt, a subcontractor for Southern Bell for several years. After leaving the corporate world, Lamar picked up the skills of his youth by beginning to plant and sell tomatoes and other vegetables from his place on Hardscrabble Road. Lamar was a lifelong beach lover and took his family to the sandy surf of Daytona every year. He enjoyed the sun and teaching his daughter and grandkids how to swim and play in the ocean. He was a known prankster to family and friends and also kept a back pocket full of jokes for fun. We will miss his easy laugh and love of life. Lamar was preceded in death by his parents Walt and Corine, his mother-in-law, Eula Bell Webb, and many cherished family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Jean (Webb) Holbrook, his daughter Lisa Cash (husband Neal) of Woodstock, GA, his Grandchildren, Russell Cash (wife Sarabeth), Joshua Cash and Kelly VanBeek (husband Daniel), his Great Grandchildren, Raleigh and Seylah VanBeek. A visitation for friends will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 3PM to 5PM at Northside Chapel. A private family service will be held on Saturday. Interment will be at Georgia National Cemetery.
