Mrs. Mildred Center Gilmer

February 3, 1929 - August 14, 2021

Our family sadly lost our matriarch, Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, when Mrs. Mildred C. Gilmer left her earthly life to join her departed husband, parents and brothers in heaven. Born in Atlanta in 1929 to Garnett and Thelma Center, Millie and her 3 brothers, Lloyd, Jack and Charles (all deceased) lived with their parents on various Army bases - including Hawaii. Eventually her father retired to a farm in Greene County, GA, where Millie attended high school and then college at GSCW in Milledgeville. After college, Millie worked at the Savannah River Plant, where she met her husband Weir B. Gilmer Jr. She became a widow at the age of 33 with 4 young children, and at that time moved closer to her family in Augusta and attended MCG. She became a Medical Record Administrator, working at Georgia Regional Hospital and served a term as President of the Georgia Medical Record Assn. The next phase of her career would find her living in Brookhaven, GA, for 35 years, eventually retiring from Kinder Morgan. She is survived by her 4 children, Meri McAdams, Elizabeth Chappelle, Weir Gilmer (Beth Mathews) and Meg Hornbeck (Rick); 4 grandchildren, Jim Hornbeck (Amanda), Kathryn McAdams, Rebecca Wilson (James) and Caroline Gilmer; and 2 great-grandchildren, Jackson and Abigail Hornbeck; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Millie had a zest for life and loved people. One of a kind - she will be missed. There will be a private interment of ashes.
