Oscar J. Groff, Jr., 94 years old of Alpharetta GA, passed away on April 6, 2021. Oscar was born in April 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland to Oscar J. Groff, Sr. and Alta (McKinley) Groff. Oscar is predeceased by his late wife of 55 beautiful years of marriage – Lucille Patricia Groff; his son Bryan Groff and sister Elsie Scott (Bud). Mr. Groff is survived by his beloved wife of ten wonderful years, Jeanette (Jan) Briere-Groff of Alpharetta; his daughter, Terri Gomez (Robert); his grandchildren Alexander and Julia; daughter-in-law Bonnie Groff; his grandchildren Jessica Mejia and Bethany Walsh and his seven great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; daughter Diana Smith (Kenneth); his grandchildren Tracey Muth and Juliet Martin and six great grandchildren; his wife Jan’s family; Bill Briere (Yvette) and grandchildren Joey and Nicholas; Carrie Armento (Dave) and grandchildren Aubrey, Donald and Daniel. Oscar set the example of hard work and academic study at an early age. He started delivering the Baltimore News-Post twice daily at the age of nine and after his retirement decades later, he helped to teach seniors how to access information through the internet at the Roswell Adult Center. Oscar completed his education graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and enlisted in the United States Army Airforces (USAAF) in 1943. He was honorably discharged, being decorated with the World War II Victory Medal. Oscar was always helping others; as an active member of community organizations, he managed and directed numerous charitable projects. Oscar was a lifelong woodworker, carpenter, builder, business owner, and problem solver. He was always active and spent much of his life near or on the water, enjoying boating, fishing, and swimming. Oscar had a never-ending thirst for knowledge, a remarkable sense of humor, and a fascination with the world around him. He was wise, courageous, strong, and kind. He will be best remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather (Pop-Pop), brother, son, and friend, and for always looking after his loved ones before himself. A private family celebration of Oscar’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 15th at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, room 305, 2850 Old Alabama Rd, Johns Creek, GA 30022. Officiating the church service will be Pastor Jason Zemke. The burial will be at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Dr. Canton, GA 30114 at a later date.
