Mr. William Annis

July 25, 1936 - December 31, 2021

William M. Annis, formerly of Jupiter, Florida was born, raised, and educated in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Long Island University on a full athletic scholarship and was captain of the swim team. Bill was awarded the Sportsman of the Year in 1959. He graduated with a degree in education in 1960. During the summers while he was in high school and college, he served as a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach; eventually becoming the chief lifeguard responsible for the entire 17-mile peninsula. After graduating college, Bill began his teaching career in New York City before taking a position in the Farmingdale School District in 1962, where he remained for the next 30 years. He taught physical education and coached several sports at the junior high school level for the first half of his career. He then moved to Farmingdale High in 1978, where he taught and coached the Varsity Boys and Girls team winning several Nassau County Championships and influencing hundreds of young men and women. Bill was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 35 years and was a member of the Clara Barton Society. He taught thousands of kids how to swim for the Farmingdale Youth Council and coached the local AAU swim team for decades. He was also a member of the Masons, serving in many positions at the district and state level including District Deputy Grand Master in 1980. Upon retirement, he relocated back to Jupiter, Florida where he remained active in the Masons and Shriners. Bill passed away after a lengthy illness on December 31, 2021 in Marietta, Georgia while seeking treatment. He is survived by Jane, his wife of 59 years; his son, William; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lesley, who died in 2020.
