Carolyn Duggan Hollis, 98, passed away on March 29, 2024, with her beloved daughter, Katie, by her side. She was the daughter of William Duggan and Velma Tanner Duggan of Sandersville, GA. Carolyn graduated from Bessie Tift College in 1948 and taught High School English in Griffin, GA and Sandersville, GA.
In 1948, Carolyn married Charles Davis Hollis Jr., MD of Forsyth, GA. While Dr. Hollis finished his cardiology specialty training at Emory University in Atlanta, she worked at Retail Credit Company and taught at Dekalb county schools. The Hollis's moved to Minnesota for additional training where their first child, Carol Elizabeth Hollis, was born in 1950. Dr. Hollis was called into the military service shortly after Carol's birth, and they were stationed in Germany for two years. Carolyn spoke fondly of her time in Germany and their travels while overseas.
At the end of his service, the family returned to Atlanta where Dr. Hollis completed a year as a fellow in cardiology at Emory. During that time, they had their second child, Charles Davis Hollis III, and, in June 1954, they moved to Albany, GA where Dr. Hollis was a founding partner of Albany Internal Medicine. The Hollis's 3rd child, Catherine Rowe Hollis, was also born in Albany.
Carolyn was an active member of the Albany First United Methodist Church, the Medical Auxiliary (where she served as President), and the Albany Junior League (where she was chairperson of the volunteer service committee). Carolyn was a dedicated homemaker and a gracious host and entertainer. She assisted her husband behind the scenes in many of his leadership roles in the Georgia medical community and, later, with the company he co-founded, MAG Mutual. She was often his speech writer and always his devoted partner and advocate.
Mrs. Hollis was dedicated to her family and her friends. She continued to live in Albany until the summer of 2018 when she moved to be closer to her daughters in Atlanta. Carolyn lived with her daughter, Katie, and her husband until 2022 when she moved into Historic Roswell Place Assisted Living Community. She was loved for her positive outlook, her quick wit, her zest for life, and her fierce loyalty to her friends and family.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Katie) Hollis Brewer; grandsons Michael Baumgartner (Laura), Hollis and Hayes Brewer, and Charles Davis Hollis, IV; granddaughter, Rachel Hollis Sulkowski; 4 great grandchildren: Kealey Jane Baumgartner, Elizabeth Louise Baumgartner, Charlotte Gray Sulkowski, and Emma Jo Sulkowski; and 2 step grandchildren: Sam and Sadie Barber.
Carolyn was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles Hollis Jr., her daughter, Carol Hollis Baumgartner, her son, Charles Davis Hollis III, her grandson, Matthew Wooding Baumgartner, and her son-in-law, Dwayne Anderson Brewer.
A service of celebration of Carolyn's life will be held on Monday, April 8th at 11AM in the chapel at Roswell United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends in the parlor after the service. Interment will be at a later date.
The family would like to extend their thanks to the following friends who visited with her constantly, showering her with love, care, and special treats: Elaine Gill, Sherry Harris, Pat Quarles, Beth Leahy, Holly Townley, Susan Woolbright, Jane Connell, and Anne Reynolds.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Carolyn's memory to the Carol Hollis Baumgartner Family Endowment RUMC Foundation, Inc. at Roswell United Methodist Church which provides support and assistance to those caring for family and friends.
