Cheryl Harbin Reese, 77, beloved Nonna, mother, nurse, and teacher, passed away on January 31st, 2025. Born on October 2, 1947 in Mobile, AL, her warmth and kindness touched the life of everyone who knew her.
Cheryl held many roles in her life. She was the oldest of 6 children, and the care and nurturing she took on in her family led her to a career in nursing. As a nurse, she brought comfort and care to those who suffered. Later, as a professor of nursing at the University of North Carolina, she helped develop hundreds of students into nurses who would go into the world and do the same. She then paused her career to take on motherhood. She created an environment that made her three children love learning, home, and each other. She encouraged them to pursue their dreams, always offering support and encouragement. When they went into the world, she went back to teaching, this time as a middle school science teacher at her beloved church and school, Corpus Christi. In her years there, she inspired hundreds of students to love and appreciate science and how it brings joy and beauty to the world around them. She also used this time to grow in her faith, developing a deep connection with God and the Catholic Church.
After retiring in 2020, she leaned into her favorite job of all - being Nonna to her 6 brilliant and talented grandchildren. She always had time to spare, a loving ear, warm hugs, and wise words for her grandbabies. They will dearly miss their sweet Nonna, and will honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Cheryl is survived by her children Catherine, Mark (Elizabeth), and Kelly; and her beloved grandchildren David, Benjamin, James, Aurora, Lorelei, and Jack. A memorial service will be planned in Mobile, AL for early April so that all who loved her can celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Planetary Society in her name.
