Edward Raymond Askins, a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, passed away on Memorial Day, May 27, 2024. The son of True and Julianna Askins, Ed was born on April 3, 1948 in Miami, Florida. He attended Miami Jackson High School, Miami-Dade Community College, and Pratt Institute in New York with a focus in Fine Arts. Ed's art education led to a career in graphic arts and design.
At the age of 18, Ed enlisted in the United States Air Force. As part of this service, he worked on the Titan II missile under the Strategic Aerospace Division at the Vandenberg Air Force base in California. He also worked as a communications and electronics specialist in the Panama Canal Zone and was recognized for helping his unit earn the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
Ed was a legendary storyteller. He loved to share stories of his high school glory days, wild adventures in the service, and his infamous cross country trips on his beloved Norton motorcycle.
Ed was a lover of art, music, and photography. He visited many national parks throughout his life and was very proactive in supporting conservation programs for present and future generations.
In his later years, he became passionate about gardening and genealogy. He loved planting flowers, working in the yard, and watching the birds and deer from his back porch.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, True and Julianna Askins; and his granddaughter, Eva Julianna Hotz. Ed is survived by his wife, Bobbie Askins; his two daughters, Jenee Price (Zak) and Roxanne Hotz (George); his two grandsons, James and Harrison Hotz; his brother, James Askins (Margie); and two nieces, Amber Gearhart (Tim) and Laura Cruz (Josue.)
A memorial service honoring the life of Ed will be held on June 13, 2024 at 12:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. Please arrive at 12:15, but no later than 12:25.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on June 13, 2024 at 6:30 pm at Local on North, 170 North St, Canton, GA 30114. Please contact Bobbie or Roxanne if you plan to attend the Celebration of Life gathering by Friday, June 7th.
