Edward "Ed" Joseph Wegener, 90, of Alpharetta, passed away peacefully at his home on January 23, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was born on November 24, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan to Frank Anthony Wegener and Mary Louise (nee; Rabe) Wegener. In his early years, Ed graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1954, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii. He later in Detroit met his beloved wife, Julie Ann Graham, and they were married on May 9, 1959. Ed and Julie were blessed with 6 children.
After Ed's military service he worked for 3M, St. Claire, and Boise Cascade. In 1968, he co-founded Century Packaging; a retail, specialty gift wrapping, and promotional product packaging company. He not only took pride in his work, but truly enjoyed the friends he made during his time in business. Over the years, he was known for his astute business sense and was often referred to as "Slick Eddie." Ed will always be remembered as a self-made, savvy, and devoted entrepreneur.
In addition to his passion for business, he had a strong loving devotion to his family. Ed was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, family, and friends, visiting 49 out of 50 states and multiple countries abroad. He was involved in many church activities, including Knights of Columbus and Ushering. He also served on the board for Meals on Wheels of Atlanta. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
Ed Wegener was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Ann Wegener; parents, Mary and Frank Wegener; oldest son, Mark Edward Wegener; and his sisters, Margaret Mary Wegener, Gertrude Catherine Phalen, Louise Elinor Renkowski, and Elizabeth Ann Wegener.
Survivors include his children, Paul Joseph Wegener, Diane Therese Wegener, Mary Beth Wegener, Scott Thomas Wegener and Dawn Slowikowski, and Christopher John Wegener and wife Lindsay; Grandchildren, Ashley Dykes Griffin and husband Cory, Caroline Elizabeth Hamm and husband Taylor, William Christopher Wegener, Emory Ann Wegener, John Paul Wegener, Lilly Kate Wegener, and Jackson Christopher Wegener; and Great Grandchildren, James Wesley Griffin, William Taylor Griffin, and Ryan Joseph Griffin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is January 30, 2025 at 6:00-7:30pm and Rosary 7:30pm-8:00pm at St. Brigid Catholic Church.
Funeral Mass is January 31, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Brigid Catholic Church, reception to follow.
