Obituary

Esther Myrtle (Schuchmann) Shaffer, aged 95, died September 16, 2024, at Oak Leaf Manor in Roswell, Georgia. The only girl in the family of three boys, Esther was born on January 12, 1929 in Carlyle, Illinois to Elmer and Lydia Schuchmann.

Esther is a graduate of the University of Illinois, class of 1950 and in 1962 earned a master's degree from Michigan State University. She was a Home Economics teacher in Bellevue, MI, Rantoul, IL, and Mascoutah, IL before retiring in 1984.

Mrs. Shaffer leaves behind: two sons, George Shaffer of Mesquite, NV; and Ron (Julie) Shaffer of Mesquite, NV; daughter, Heidi (Steve) Howard of Roswell, GA; and daughter-in-law, Cris Shaffer of Erie, CO. Esther is also survived by four grandchildren: Chelsea (Charlie) Winnick, namesake Wayne Shaffer, Deric Shaffer, and Luke Howard.

Esther was a lifelong and faithful member of the United Methodist Church. Along with her husband, Wayne, they belonged to United Methodist churches in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Arizona, and Georgia. While in Georgia, she enjoyed being very active in the coordination of Wednesday night suppers at Johns Creek UMC. She also was an avid seamstress making outfits for herself and Heidi. She made many sets of curtains, tablecloths, and pillows to help her children decorate their homes. Well into her late 80's she could still do mending jobs for her neighbors and friends. She took up knitting after she retired and made hundreds of booties and caps for newborns, giving them to hospitals and churches. She was able to see items in stores and say "I can make that" and off to her sewing machine and serger she went. She loved going to fabric stores with Heidi, and even worked at Hancock Fabric for several years after she retired.

Esther, was preceded in death by her husband of more than 72 years, whom she married on May 19, 1951. Mrs. Shaffer was also preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Lydia Schuchmann and her three brothers, Evans (1923-27), Elmer Jr. (1927-2014), Maurice (1931-1933); and son Eric (1959-2022).
