Obituary

Gary Ray Johnson, 76, of Roswell, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home on August 11, 2026.

Gary was a member of Roswell United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee, and went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1970. He later received his MBA in Marketing from Mercer University, where he also served as a professor of marketing.

Throughout his distinguished career, Gary traveled extensively throughout the world. Before his retirement, he served as Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing for Cybex/Avocent Corporation. He was a member of Delta Upsilon at the University of Tennessee and remained actively involved with his alma mater through his service on the University of Tennessee Development Council beginning in 2009 and as a member of the UT Tickle School of Engineering Cornerstone Society. He was also a Life Member of the Roswell Historical Society.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Earl Johnson and Hazel Lee McAfee Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; his son, Samuel (Emily) Johnson; his daughter, Robin (Alvin) Begovic; his stepdaughter, Laura Grace Faris; his stepson, Leon Faris; and his grandchildren; Andrew Maier, Dewey Curtis, Caitlin Curtis, Elijah Smith, and Shephard Smith.

A memorial service for Gary will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at Northside Chapel on Crabapple Road in Roswell, Georgia. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service following at noon. A private family interment will be held at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Clinton, Tennessee at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Johnson Family Engineering Scholarship Endowment. Checks may be made payable to the UT Foundation, with "Johns_12" noted in the memo line, and mailed to UT Foundation, 1525 University Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37921.
