Obituary

Mr. James J. Crowley III, age 78, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, October 9, 2023.

James, who went by "Jim" or "Jimmy" to those who loved him best, was proud to be born in the Bronx, NY, and then raised in Phoenix, AZ. After graduating from Sunny Slope High School he attended Arizona State University until enlisting in the Navy where he met his wife of 46 years, Liz Ryan. After finishing his Navy career he took a sales position with Metropolitan Life and moved several times before settling in Sandy Springs, Georgia in 1982 with Liz, son Joe, and daughter Beth. Jim retired as an Executive Vice President of Metropolitan Life at the age of 55 which allowed him to spend even more time on his beloved golf course at Dunwoody Country Club where he proudly served as President. He was a faithful member of All Saints Catholic Church and in later years St. Judes Catholic Church. Unfortunately, he lost Liz in 2013 to a long battle with ovarian cancer. Jim was truly fortunate to have found loving companionship in the last stage of his life and married Cherri Campbell in 2017. Jim had a special gift for connecting with people and touched many lives. His influence and humor will forever remain in the lives of all who were blessed enough to know him. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Liz Crowley. Jim and Liz are survived by their son, Joe Crowley, son-in-law Phil Mack, daughter Beth Berwald, son-in-law Tony Berwald, and their grandchildren Ryan Berwald, Adam Berwald, and Lucca Crowley-Mack. Jim is survived by his wife Cherri Crowley, step-daughter Lindsey Sorensen, stepson-in-law Nate Sorensen, and their grandchildren, Samuel Sorensen and Hagen Sorensen. Jim is also survived by his brothers Michael Crowley and Brian Crowley as well as sisters JoAnn Traver and Trisha Jaramillo and their families.

A private family interment will be held at Georgia National Cemetery on October 26th, and a private celebration of life will be at Dunwoody Country Club on October 29th.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Emory Winship Cancer Institute: https://winshipcancer.emory.edu/support-winship/give/index.html .
