James "Jim" Thomas Moore

James Thomas Moore, 85, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2026, from complications of multiple myeloma. Jim was born December 4, 1940, in Salina, Kansas. He was the youngest of six children born to the late Alva and Gladys (Peterson) Moore. Jim graduated from Salina High School with the Class of 1958 and attended Kansas State University. He married the love of his life, Davilee “Lee” Jones Moore, and together they shared 53 years of marriage. Jim proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1963 through 1968. His military service began at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and later included service with the 42nd Personnel Services Company in Orlando, Florida. Jim began his professional career with Learjet in Wichita, Kansas, where his hard work earned him several promotions. He later moved to Orlando, Florida, and became a valued employee of Bendix Corporation’s Launch Support Division at Kennedy Space Center during the Apollo program. An excellent manager from an early age, he again earned several promotions. Jim and Lee welcomed their first child, Erin Taylor, while living in Orlando. Eventually, Jim’s brother Charlie lured him north with an opportunity to join the family insurance business, Adrian Insurance Agency, in Adrian, Michigan. Jim and Lee welcomed their second child, James Ryan, in Adrian. Five years later, warmer weather and the opportunity to be closer to Lee’s family drew them to Atlanta. They bought a home in Dunwoody in 1976, where they built a full and happy life. In Atlanta, Jim served as president of the Atlanta Division of J. Smith Lanier & Co. from 1977 to 1987. He later founded the James T. Moore Company, building a successful career in insurance and professional-liability programs. In later years, he led James T. Moore Consulting, sharing his experience with insurance agencies and related businesses on growth, valuations, acquisitions, and financing. Jim provided a comfortable life for his family and was generous with both his time and resources, always ready to help a friend in need. He was an impeccable dresser, a natural host, and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his friends and family and was always there to help his children and grandchildren whenever they needed him. He enjoyed waterskiing, snow skiing, cars, tennis, golf, and nearly every kind of sport—especially football, NASCAR, and baseball. For a time, he worked weekends for Union 76 in the pit during NASCAR races, combining his love of cars and racing with an experience he greatly enjoyed. He treasured weekends at the lake, time with his neighborhood tennis friends, and later the friendships he made in his golf community. He also took great joy in coaching his children’s sports teams and later in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and musical performances. He was still snow skiing at age 78, a testament to his energy, enthusiasm, and refusal to let age slow him down. Jim also loved sunsets, especially those over the water or across a Kansas sunflower field. His adventurous spirit led him to earn his pilot’s license for small aircraft, another reflection of his lifelong curiosity and love of life. Above all, Jim loved spending time with his three grandchildren, Liv, John, and Cullen. He knew the secret to enjoying life, and those who loved him will remember his generosity, style, friendship, and unwavering devotion to the people closest to him. Jim is survived by his daughter, Erin Moore Graner, and her husband, Brad; his son, James Ryan Moore, and his fiancée, Audrey Nicholson; his grandchildren, Olivia Lee Graner, John Thomas Graner, and Cullen James Moore; and many other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lee; his parents; two brothers; and three sisters. A small family graveside service will be held on August 12 at 3:00 p.m. at Milton Fields in Milton, Georgia. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
