James Peter Caplis (Jim) was an avid golfer with a competitive spirit, a lifelong sports enthusiast, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. He passed away on July 18, 2024 at the age of 67 in Alpharetta, Georgia where he had lived since 2018. Prior to moving to Alpharetta, he was a lifelong resident of Northbrook, Illinois.
Jim was born on February 13, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Philip Caplis and the late Joan Doyle Caplis. His family moved to Northbrook from Park Ridge, Illinois when he was in the fourth grade and he attended St. Norbert School. Jim played on various little league teams where he made lifelong friends. He graduated from Glenbrook North High School in 1974, where he played basketball, football, and baseball. He played first base on the 1974 GBN state championship baseball team.
After Jim graduated, he attended the University of Wisconsin – Madison where he played baseball. After one year, he transferred to Indiana University and was captain of the 1978-80 baseball teams and was awarded Academic All-Big Ten in 1980.
Jim began his career at Northern Trust as an auditor and then moved to AG Edwards, where he was a stockbroker and met his wife. He was active as a financial advisor in Chicago and Atlanta and continued to manage and advise many clients until his death.
While his children were growing up, Jim enjoyed coaching youth sports, including baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer. Coaching continued to be a passion of his throughout his life.
Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Margaret Murrey Caplis (Meg), a son James Thomas Caplis of Madison, Wisconsin; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) (James Ream) of Madison, Wisconsin; Anne Marie Caplis of Dallas, Texas; and Madeline Diane Caplis of Raleigh, North Carolina; Four brothers and a sister; and one granddaughter, Maeve Iris Ream.
A private service will be held with immediate family. A visitation will be held September 5th from 3PM to 7PM at N. H. Scott Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Rd, Glenview, IL 60025. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Melanoma Research Alliance:
