Obituary

James Harold Slagle, age 75, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed on from this life on August 12, 2026.

Jim was born in 1950 in Bay City, Michigan. His Family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, when Jim was 15, where he attended and graduated from East Grand Rapids High School. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Aquinas College. Jim moved to Atlanta in 1975 as an employee of Hospitality Motor Inn. He quickly began a seven year career as an elementary school teacher with the Fulton County School District in East Pointe. He continued working part-time at the hotel so he could provide items for his students that were not provided by the district. He also spent quality time with students outside of the classroom, taking them to symphonies, theater and other cultural events. Some of those students maintained contact until his passing. It was this type of caring and sacrifice that were hallmarks of Jim’s entire life. After Jim left the teaching field, he entered a successful career in Hotel Sales and Management, a profession which took him all over the country. Growing tired of the constant travel, he began a new, successful, and final career path as an Executive Director in senior living.

Jim was known to give generously of himself. He enjoyed sharing his love of music; he was an accomplished accordionist, organist, and pianist. Though he lacked formal training, aside from accordion lessons as an adolescent, he could tickle the ivories upon request. Friends, family, students, strangers, and residents of the senior living facilities were the beneficiaries of his incredible talent over the years. Additionally, anyone who had the pleasure of visiting Jim’s home for one of his wonderfully prepared meals would learn quickly of his love for antiques and artwork as well.

Jim was a much beloved son, the best big brother any young boy or man could hope for, a loving uncle, cherished cousin, and wonderful friend and mentor to countless individuals.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Barbara Slagle; and partner, Frank Provenzano. He is survived by many beloved friends, special friend, David Grossberg, a brother (Tom) and two nieces (Barbie and Mary).

Jim and his family are grateful for the kind and loving care he received from the staff at Canterbury Court and Honeybees.

Jim’s Family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m., with a celebration of life immediately following on August 28, 2026, at Northside Chapel 12050 Crabapple Rd, Roswell, GA 30075. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Jim’s memory may do so to the Aquinas College Scholarship Fund c/o Advancement Department, 1700 Fulton St. E., Grand Rapids, MI 49506.
