Dr. Jan Creighton Hines, more fondly known as "Doc" peacefully passed from this life to the next on Thursday, September 28, 2023. His memory will be forever cherished by his family, friends, colleagues and clients.

Doc is preceded in death by his step-father and mother, Jack & Barbara Hines and brother, David Hines. He is survived by his wife, Judith Balter Hines; his daughters, Pamela J. Willis (Matt) and Erika H. Bagwell; his grandchildren Joshua R. Willis (Morgan), Luke A. Willis, Isabel W. Meshanko (Jon), and Reed E. Bagwell.

Doc was born in Atlanta, GA on March 8, 1939. He learned early the value of hard work - a quality that followed him all of his life. He was the first Eagle Scout in his troop at the age of 13. His classmates at Chamblee High school voted him "Most Likely to Succeed." Little did his classmates know exactly how right they were! His drive for success and value for working hard included many jobs growing up: running a paper route, being a car hop at 62nd BBQ, loading trucks during the holidays at Rich's Department Store, being a Lab Assistant during college at Georgia State University, serving as Kitchen Manager at his fraternity house to earn free room and board, a 7/11 convenience store clerk, lab researcher at the Center for Disease Control during summer vacations, and working for Dr. Greenway in his veterinary practice throughout high school, college and veterinary school. Many of these jobs overlapped each other during his educational career. He would often work night shifts while attending school during the day.

Shortly after graduating from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine Doc bought Alpharetta Animal Hospital in 1973. He grew his business from the original 900 square foot building to what is now over 10,000 square feet in the heart of downtown Alpharetta. Doc has said, "to be honest, I loved every minute of life working at vet clinics, from my first job walking dogs to working as a vet in my own practice."

Doc was a pillar of the Alpharetta community. He helped form the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and served as Executive Vice President. He was also a 20+ year member of the Rotary Club. He was appointed twice by Governor Sonny Purdue to serve on Georgia's State Board of Veterinary Medicine and also on the American Veterinary Medical Association's Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates.

In addition to his business success, Doc was also known to be a very generous man. There are countless stories of him helping people anonymously through his extravagant generosity and kindness. His hard work gave him the ability to treat and serve others who were in need, but he never desired credit or attention. In his generosity he simply reflected the generous love and acceptance he found in Jesus Christ. Doc credits this as "the best event that happened to me" and so we have the assurance that Doc belongs to Christ both in life and death.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at 1PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4PM to 6PM at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors, Roswell, GA.
