Jean Bates Holbrook, age 72 of Canton, GA passed away the morning of March 6, 2025 at North Fulton Hospital following injuries sustained in a severe automobile accident. Jean, also known as "Mom" and "Bammaw" (grandma), is best known for her soft-spoken demeanor, gentle heart, and strong faith in Christ. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, she was actively involved in the lives of those she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow Bates and Inez Darby Bates, and her husband of nearly 50 years, Michael Holbrook. She is survived by her daughters Kimberley Castleberry and Alicia Holbrook, sister Ann Bates Price, grandchildren Kiersten Williams (Noah), Alexis, Ethan and Landon Castleberry, brother-in-law Lee Price, and Sisters-in-law Leisa Chastain (Anthony) and Kay Holbrook. Nieces, nephews, many wonderful cousins, friends, and extended family also survive.
She was saved and baptized at Liberty Grove Baptist Church in 1964 when she was 11 years old and has been a faithful member since. She shared her beautiful voice as part of the Liberty Grove Girls singing group and frequently enjoyed fellowship with the church. Jean was a bright student and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1971. She dedicated most of her career to Gold Kist Inc. as a Financial Administrator. She was highly regarded by her colleagues for her work ethic, loyalty, and friendship. She retired in 2007 after 30 years.
In her free time, she loved to play card games weekly with friends, chat at lunch outings, laugh and tell stories with family, cook, and bake. She was also a member of the Union Hill Homemakers Club. She had a gift for making the most delicious potato salad, but her greatest joy was always her family. She was not only beautiful on the outside, but she carried beauty and warmth within her. The most precious memories of Jean involve her hugs, singing, and lighthearted jokes. Her daughters and grandchildren think fondly of the years they spent in her home, under her care. She sang to them as children, dressed them up, always styling their hair just right. She also enjoyed reading books and ensuring everyone in the house was well cared for. Jean was the heartbeat of the family, always there to solve problems and offer a listening ear.
Jean Bates Holbrook will be remembered for her role as a caretaker to her family and an irreplaceable light in the lives of those privileged to have known her. She will be so missed by many.
