Luther Perdee Anderson, 92, of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018. He was born on March 21, 1926, in Spring Branch, South Carolina, the son of LC and Sallie Mincey Anderson.

Luther leaves behind his son Doug Anderson of Charleston, South Carolina, daughter Pam Chumley of Roswell, Georgia and their spouses Cheryl Anderson and Charles Chumley; grandchildren Taylor Anderson, Grayson and Blake Chumley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, their extended families and friends. He was preceded in death by high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Jean K. Anderson, parents LC and Sallie M. Anderson, and his sisters, Cottie Moore and Kathleen Bryant.

Luther graduated from Fair Bluff High School in 1943. He continued on to Clemson University to earn his BS in Agriculture-Agronomy in 1949 and a Master's degree in Agronomy in 1962. Ultimately, he received a Ph.D. from University of Georgia in 1968.

He was a U. S. Army WWII Veteran serving from 1944 to 1946. Luther was assigned to Battery "C" 232nd Field Artillery Battalion, 42nd Infantry "Rainbow" Division during combat operations in Europe.

Luther worked for Clemson University for 36 years, starting his career in the Extension Service in Horry County, later serving as a department head and ultimately, the Dean of Agriculture for 14 years until his retirement in 1986.

An artist at heart, he spent countless hours doodling on post-it notes as well as some substantial pieces of oil and watercolor. His artistry carried over to the kitchen where he spent mornings creating pancake masterpieces for his grandchildren. He was a wonderful, loving father, grandfather and friend.

He enjoyed sailing, developing a love for it in the 1960's and spending 10 years traveling the Intracoastal Water Way along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico with his bride on the Ramblers I & II.


Luther and his family thank Visiting Angels for the great care they provided, specifically Yvonne Spencer and Ursule Camille who not only extended the length, but the quality of Luther's life. We are blessed to have had their support over the last few years.

A celebration of life will be held at Northside Chapel, 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, GA 30075 on Thursday, July 5th at 2 pm. Luther's family will receive friends from 1-2 pm.

There will also be a service in Luther's hometown, on Saturday July 7th at 1 pm at the Spring Branch Baptist Church, 6710 Church Loop, Nichols, SC 29581 followed by a graveside ceremony at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association or North River Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia or Spring Branch Baptist Church in Nichols, South Carolina.
