Maria Mitchell, age 20, of Roswell, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2024, in New Haven, Connecticut. Maria was born on January 31, 2004, in Atlanta, Georgia, and she was the beloved daughter of Christy and Joe Mitchell.
Maria spent her childhood in Roswell, attending Atlanta Academy, Elkins Pointe Middle School, and Roswell High School. She briefly resided in Tallahassee, Florida, before joining Turnbridge, a residential treatment program in Connecticut, in May 2023. After completing the program in July 2024, Maria was living in New Haven at the time of her passing.
Maria had an amazing, loving care team and sober network, yet she succumbed to the devastating mental health disease of addiction. For those that are struggling or already in recovery, her family prays you will embrace the support of professionals and your sober network now more than ever.
Maria was a nature lover from early childhood. Her mother affectionately called her "Bug" (Love Bug) without even realizing it. She rode horses for years, achieving national recognition in equestrian competitions.
Maria was also a gifted artist, particularly enjoying painting and ceramics. At age 13, she received a national award for her original artwork.
Maria had a soul that was both old and young at the same time, with a wisdom beyond her years. She possessed a childlike curiosity, a witty and whimsical sense of humor, and an incredibly gentle nature. Maria made everyone around her feel seen and loved. Her kindness radiated and was felt by anyone blessed to have encountered her. Maria's influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew and loved her. Her deep love for her family and friends will endure in our hearts, guiding us in this life and the next.
Preceded in death by her grandparents, Maria Bosley, Delores Bosley, and Joan and Joe Mitchell, all of Huntsville, Alabama, Maria is survived by her parents, Christy and Joe Mitchell of Miramar Beach, Florida; her grandfather, Jerry Bosley; her uncle, Mike Mitchell (wife Jenny); her aunt, Annette Payne Birchfield; her cousins, Davison Payne (wife Alli), Hayes Payne (wife Callie), and Anna Mitchell, all of Huntsville, Alabama; extended family in Miami, Florida, and Owensboro, Kentucky; and many friends and loved ones.
Maria's family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
