Marshall King Hall, 80, of Woodstock, Georgia, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2024.
Often the biggest personality in the room, with a wicked sense of humor and a passion for life, he was born in New York City in 1944 to the late Margaret Wheeler Hall and Robert King Hall.
As a child, he was a rambunctious boy where he regularly wreaked havoc and mayhem on his elders. He often said his claim to fame was being kicked out of many of the finest boarding schools across Europe before finishing high school in Banner Elk, North Carolina under the guidance (and thumb) of his beloved uncle. He went on to a short stint at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, until the Army got ahold of him by way of the draft.
He served as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division where he became a parachuter and participated in the US military intervention in the Dominican Civil War. He was honorably discharged in 1969 and proudly chanted Airborne cadences on many ruckus occasions throughout his long life thereafter. Following the Army, he went on to graduate UNC Chapel Hill at record pace and with honors before obtaining a law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, much to his parents' surprise.
He enjoyed a long career as the Deputy State Attorney of the 20th Judicial Circuit in Fort Myers, Florida. He always said he was cut out for a career in the law - either on its good side or bad side. His family was very glad that he chose the good side. Over his 30-year career, he mentored numerous young prosecutors, oversaw many offices and divisions, and successfully prosecuted some of the highest profile cases and most egregious criminals. It was a sad day when he retired, but North Carolina and the mountains were calling.
He was a faithful Christian and longtime member of Long's Chapel in Waynesville, NC. He enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life including sports fishing, scuba diving, skeet shooting, dog showing, and his favorite hobby, hunting. His trophies included a prized elk, scimitar oryx, 12-foot alligator, very ugly boar, ram, fox, bobcat, multiple dear, sail fish, mahi mahi, in addition to several other fish and critters, all of which his family politely tolerated taking up residence in the home.
But his one true love was his adored wife, Carol, who he met on a blind date in college (not his blind date mind you, but his friend's). The two were inseparable ever since and were married nearly 55 years. He and Carol had one child, Sherry Hall Culves, who he always made sure to tell how proud he was and how much he loved her. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Sherry, and son-in-law, John Culves (Roswell, GA); his two grandchildren, Will (16) and Riley (14); his two sisters Margaret "Margot" Hall (Hattiesburg, MS) and Louise "Whee" Chaffin (Marietta, GA); his niece, Tracy Wilson; his nephew, Robert "Mark" Chaffin; as well as many others whom he loved dearly. He was also blessed with life-long friends from both Florida and North Carolina as well as new friendships formed at Holbrook at Woodstock.
Known as Mighty Marshall to those that loved him, even in his later years, he went on fighting. He beat cancer and many other ailments for longer than he ever thought possible. We think he has earned his peace and is now sipping a cocktail in heaven enjoying his reward.
A celebration of life will be held at Holbrook at Woodstock on Saturday, July 6th at 3:00 p.m. A private family interment will be held in Castine, Maine at a later date.
