Richard Delano Coleman, age 92, of Cumming, GA passed away on December 25, 2025.
Born March 9, 1933 to George Elvin Coleman and Pauline Henry Coleman in Dunwoody, GA. His parents named him in honor of US Senator Richard Russell and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
He attended Hammond School and North Fulton High School.
He graduated from North Georgia College (now University of North Georgia) with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1956. He was Commander of the ROTC Corps of Cadets his Senior year, was Sergeant Major his Junior year, and was a Distinguished Military Graduate. While at North Georgia, he also was the starting Catcher for the baseball team for four years and was a team Captain for three years.
After College, he served in the US Army as a First Lieutenant as a small unit leader. He earned many military awards including Parachutist badge, Jumpmaster qualification, and Expert Infantry Badge. His duty Stations included Fort Benning and South Korea along the DMZ.
He married Patricia Ruth Shattuck of LaFayette, Georgia in 1959. Together, they moved to Roswell and had three sons; Scott (Lisa), Brian (Donna), and Bruce (Dru). They now have 6 grandchildren; Lauren, Matthew, Christina, Taylor, Zachary, and Hannah.
After his military service ended in 1959, he worked briefly at General Motors before joining the family business, George E. Coleman and Sons.
There, he participated in land development and home building alongside his brothers, George and Larry. In 1971, he started his own business, Richard D.
Coleman, Builder. He continued self-employment in land development and home building until his retirement in 1990.
During retirement, he served on the City of Roswell code revision Committee, Public works Committee, Industrial Authority, and Board of zoning appeals.
He and his brothers participated in starting the Coleman Fund at the University of North Georgia and helped fund the Coleman Planetarium and the Coleman Fieldhouse. He served Roswell United Methodist Church as a member of the Board of Stewards, as a member of the Building Committee, as well as a member of the Seekers Class.
Richard will be remembered as a man of faith, a family man, and a hardworking, generous and funny man of integrity.
Richard's family will receive friends on Friday, January 2, 2026 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm at Northside Chapel. A memorial service will follow.
