Thelma Jo Payne Murrey passed away peacefully on September 14, 2026, at the age of 93.
Thelma was born on October 2, 1932, in Orme, Tennessee, to Newt and Elizabeth Raines Payne. She was raised in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, alongside her six siblings. As a young woman, Thelma and her sister Ruby moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where she met the love of her life, Bill Murrey.
Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was the ultimate homemaker, with a special talent for cooking, gardening, and creating a beautiful and welcoming home. Her waffles and muffins were legendary among her family, and the warmth and love she brought to her home will always be remembered.
Thelma was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Murrey; her son, Greg Murrey; her daughter, Janel Murrey Maini; and her siblings, Joyce, Mary Ellen, Elmer, and Jack.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela K. Murrey; her grandchildren, Jason Murrey (Kasey) and Abby Murrey Davis (Keith); her six great-grandchildren, Madeleine, Hayes, Greer, Audrey, Wesley, and Nora Kate; her daughter-in-law, Laura Murrey; her sister, Ruby and brother, Orville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will gather on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
Thelma lived a long and full life, leaving behind a legacy of love, family, and cherished memories. Her family finds peace and comfort in knowing that she is reunited with those she loved who went before her.
