William (Billy) Joseph Welch, 82, passed away on September 3, 2023 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Morrison Welch; his parents, William Walker and Rene' Lanore Stapleton Welch; sisters Rita Edwards and Sharlene Welch; as well as daughter-in-law, Cheryl Welch.
Billy was born in Savannah, GA on March 9, 1941. He graduated from Groves High School in 1960. He played football and was known as one of the best Running Backs in the area. He served 4 years in the US Navy, aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri -La. He retired from Gulfstream Aerospace after 34 years as a Senior Material Planner in Production. After retirement, Billy moved to Marietta, GA where he resided until his death. He was also a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Billy enjoyed reading, watching historical documentaries, as well as old Disney movies and cartoons. He liked gardening, growing tomatoes and, in his younger days, dancing. He really enjoyed eating and drinking his favorite drink, Pepsi.
Billy is survived by, his wife, Lissell Welch; sons, Brian Welch and Michael C. (Paije) Welch; daughter, Joy Welch (Mike) Huber; grandchildren, Mason Morgan, Hunter Welch, Will Huber and Miles Huber; sister Sylvia Linde; brother Mark (Darlene) Welch; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am, on Friday, September 8, 2023, at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery, 1336 Dean Forest Rd., Savannah, GA 31405. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be sent to the charity of your choice, in Billy's name.
