Eunice Edna Carroll

LOCAL BERLIN AIRLIFT RAF SGT HERO DIES, RECEIVED LETTER FROM QUEEN ELIZABETH II Eunice Edna Carroll (Nee Sherratt), died June 18, 2009 from cancer, she was 80 years old. She was born and raised in Crewe, Cheshire, England on 13 March 1929, the youngest daughter of Norman and Jane Sherratt both deceased, formally of Waverly Court Crewe. She has one sister IRENE EVANS, now living in Wales, England. She had two brothers both deceased Lawrence and Geoffrey. Lawrence was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross, by King George VI, and Geoffrey was a Chief Naval Petty Officer who served with Prince Phillip. When World War II, broke out she joined the Land Army and worked on Farms. When she was 17 years old she joined the Royal Air Force (RAF), she served from 1946-1950. She was stationed in Berlin Germany during 1948 and 1949 during the entire period of the Berlin Airlift and was responsible to help turn the Aircraft around for take off within the required time when one was landing every two minutes. During the war she and her sister met most of the troop trains passing thru Crewe and gave help, comfort and assistance to the troops. In addition she spent many hours volunteering with the British Red Cross, with her dad. She has been awarded numerous Red Cross badges and pins. She lived next to the Rolls Royce works in Crewe, and as a result, her house was bombed three times. During her service with the RAF, she was awarded the British Forces Medal for service in Germany, the National Service Medal and the Cold War Medal. She met and married SGT MAJOR US Army Edward P. Carroll, from South Boston, MA., when he was stationed in England. Their oldest daughter Susan was born in London, England. They had been married almost 60 years, and have five children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. During her life EDNA, as she is known, wore many hats, wife, mother, helper, military wife supporter, President of the German American Club, President of the Purple Heart Auxillary, supporter of the American Legion, VFW, DAV, NAUS, MOAA, AAAA, VHPA and the VA. No matter where her husband was stationed, on any post, camp station or fort, EDNA, would always volunteer to work at the local military hospital. She also worked with the American as well as the British Red Cross. She always made a difference in the community where she lived, she carried the respect of her peers, and always displayed moral courage and vision in making and delivering tough choices. She became an American in 1965. She had just recently received a letter from Queen Elizabeth II, of England, wishing her well and thanking her for her service to her country in peace and war. She also received a letter from Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy of the Royal Air Force thanking her for her service in the RAF. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Carroll’s memory to Freedom Tabernacle, 2160 Freedom PKWY. Cumming, GA. 30041. Viewing will be held from 1300 hours until 1500 hours on June 21, 2009 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1500 hours on Sunday in the funeral home chapel. She will be interred at the Georgia National Cemetery. She is survived by her husband Lt. COLONEL Edward P. Carroll, and children Susan A. Lieberman, Michael N. Carroll, Patricia M. Thompson, Charlene E. Wood and Sheila E. Carroll.
