Dr. Gregory D. Bossart

Dr. Gregory Bossart, husband to Jennifer Kimbrell Bossart, and devoted father to Ansley Claire, Haydan Kimbrell, and Charles Gregory Bossart entered the arms of his Savior on 19 November 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. Greg worked for over 30 years in clinical domestic, marine mammal, and avian medicine and wildlife pathology on a national and international level. He grew up in Western Pennsylvania. Greg’s undergraduate degrees in biology and physical geography are from the University of Pittsburgh. He received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a comparative pathology resident and National Institutes of Health fellow in the Department of Pathology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. In 1995, he completed his Ph.D. in immunology at Florida International University. Before his death, Greg was the Senior Vice President and Chief Veterinary Officer at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia, where he oversaw the animal care, research, and conservation programs. Greg was not only a highly respected veterinarian, pathologist, and conservationist, but a kind and thoughtful person, committed to advancing the understanding of marine mammals. Greg was Voluntary Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Miami’s School of Medicine, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine, and on the graduate faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina. While Greg’s professional focus was on aquatic marine mammals, he dedicated personal time for his family. He encouraged academic excellence with Ansley and Haydan. Both girls are great examples of Greg’s intellectual curiosities. They are also both athletes just as Greg was– a champion surfer! Little Charlie (2 years old) will certainly follow in his Daddy’s (Birkenstock) footsteps. Greg will be terribly missed by family, friends, and colleagues from around the world. Although missed, his legacy in aquatic marine mammals and his love for his family and friends remain a constant for forever! In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you make a donation to one of the causes close to their hearts: the Georgia Aquarium Research & Conservation Program, the Christian Veterinary Mission, or Medical Missions Ministry in Guatemala. A Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 PM, 23 November 2019 at the Fellowship Bible Church, 480 West Crossville Road, Roswell, Georgia.
