Robert P. "Bob" Daly

Robert Daly died peacefully on March 5th after a brave, two year struggle with brain cancer. He was 67 years young. Bob embodied all of the Boy Scout virtues. He lived a moderate life notable for all of his good healthy habits. He was loyal, honorable, helpful and kind to others, reliable and he lived his life with great integrity. This may make Bob sound boring, but he was never that. He was funny, warm and generous and always great company. Born in San Jose, California to Joe and Angelina Daly; his Sicilian heritage filled him with the joy of simple pleasures. His parents, his Grandpa Fuccio and his Grandma Dali imbued him with a love of Sicilian culture. A vegetable and herb garden was always a part of his life and his mother's cooking created a lifelong love of pasta and other Sicilian dishes. Bob knew who he was from very early on, and the passions that he embraced in his youth would come to define his life. As Bob grew into manhood his love expanded to include his wife, Kimberly Goozée, his fraternity brothers, and classic and sports cars. Bob went to his hometown college, San Jose State University, and there, formed relationships that would last his entire life. It was at summer jobs at Frontier Village Amusement Park where he met Kim and, as they say, the rest is history. She was the love of his life. They would marry and be together for 42 fabulous years. He also joined Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity whose mission was leadership, friendship and service. The fraternal bonds he formed would last his whole life. Even before he met Kim, his love of fine cars was evident. On their first date, Bob picked Kim up in his 1963, carmen red Jaguar XKE, which he had fallen in love with and purchased with his earnings. Off they drove, on a journey that would last their whole adult lives. They had each found their ideal match. They shared the same values. Kim's exuberance, her love of adventure, and her great sense of humor kept Bob laughing and enjoying life to its fullest. Before finishing his BA and MA degrees, Bob joined General Electric, where he spent his entire career until his retirement four years ago. With Kim's encouragement, Bob decided to join GE's International Division early on. As a result, they were able to spend four years in Madrid, Spain where both Bob and Kim were heavily involved in the expatriate community. Bob proved himself an extraordinarily capable manager in a variety of positions. His favorite positions involved project management while satisfying temporary and permanent energy needs of GE customers around the world. All during Bob's career, he did not neglect his other passions, his fraternity brothers and his lifelong love of cars and Grand Prix racing. He and Kim attended many Grand Prix races in North America and Europe over the years. He kept his XKE from his youth, maintained it in perfect condition, joined the Atlanta Jaguar Society, and drove it around with the top down on special days. He added a 1931, Model A Ford and a bright red Acura NSX to form a small collection of cars. He housed them at home in a large garage that was immaculately outfitted as a shop where he could enjoy working on each of them. The three classic cars were very happy there, as was Bob, a classic himself. Bob was a person who was loved and admired and respected by so many, including the members of Kim's family. The Goozée siblings embraced Bob as their 4th brother and her parents thought of him as a son. He became one of them and one with them. He leaves behind many family members--both Daly's and Goozée's and countless friends, from his youth and their travels. He will be terribly missed, and will always be remembered as a prince of a guy, a classic and a class act in every way. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke or to Alpha Phi Omega. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
