Mr. Daniel Bower

Daniel (Dan) Wilbur Bower, age 84, died of complications of Alzheimer disease on August 22, 2016, at home in Alpharetta GA. Dan is survived by his wife Marilyn; his 4 children; Carol (James) Hill, Scott (Karen), Shannon (Kimberly) and Christopher (Molly) Bower; 8 grandchildren, Chris and Jon Hill, Matt, Kevin, Max, Charlie, Mary Elizabeth, Christopher Bower and 2 great grandchildren, Aden and Alexis Hill. He is survived by his sister Linda Patterson of Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Helen Bower of Columbus Ohio. Dan was born on July 8, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio to parents Bob and Helen Bower. He attended Linden McKinley High and graduated from Ohio State University in 1954. He was President of the TKE fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force as a radar controller for three years before embarking upon a career in marketing and advertising. Dan held management positions at The Kroger Company, Fisher Foods and J&H International prior to joining the lottery industry. Dan played an instrumental role in the development of instant lottery games in North America throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1973 he cofounded Scientific Games with John Koza. In 1974 Dan and John invented the scratch off lottery ticket. Dan was the second recipient of the WLA’s Guy Simonis Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding service to the lottery industry in 2002, and inducted into the Lottery Industry Hall of Fame in 2005. From 1991 until 1994, he served as Chairman of Automated Wagering International before becoming Co-Chairman of Tele-Com Productions. He dabbled in owning a few franchises of GD Ritzy's and Kenny Rogers Roasters. Dan never liked retirement. He enjoyed Ohio State sports, golfing, spending time at his summer home on Mullett Lake in Michigan, and enjoying his grandchildren. His family and friends will always remember him telling many a joke or story at dinner parties or Mullett Lake Country Club dinners, collecting stray animals’ for the Bower family and always a positive presence. We will miss him but are at peace that he is home. A visitation is scheduled for August 25, 2016 between the hours of 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at Senior Home Companions of Georgia for taking such wonderful care of Dan in the past few years and Heritage Hospice for assisting with his transition home. Donations can be sent to your local Humane Society in honor of Dan and all his animals. “God doesn’t take things away to be cruel. … He takes things away to lighten us. He takes things away so we can fly.”
