Mr. Donald W. Shamel

Donald Wayne Shamel, of Canton, Georgia passed away quietly on February 5, 2018 following a brief battle with cancer. Don was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and graduated from Lees McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, and attended High Point University in High Point, North Carolina. A love for engineering and aviation, Don retired from Lockheed Corporation in Marietta, Georgia after a successful career. An active member in his community, Don was a member of the Alpharetta Jaycee’s, and was active in youth sports, coaching his children into their teens. Don was active in all aspects of life from his love of boating on Lake Lanier, hunting and fishing, watching the Atlanta sports team, riding dirt bikes, and attending festivals around Atlanta to name just a few. Don also had an affinity and aptitude for wood-working and routinely would refinish or build new furniture. Don was an active member of Birmingham United Methodist Church where he had many dear friends, including the men’s group. He also had a passion for cars, in particular corvettes, where he would participate in a variety of events and was an active member of his beloved Corvette Club. Don was a joy, sharing infectious love, warmth and friendship with his family, friends, and colleagues whose good fortune in life was to cross his path. Nothing brought more joy to Don than his two beautiful grandchildren, Brielle and Cody. Don was preceded in death by his son; Paul Scott Shamel, II, father, Paul Scott Shamel; and mother, Blanche Shamel. Don is survived by his partner, Linda Spence; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Michele Shamel; grandchildren, Brielle and Cody Shamel; brother and sister-in-law, Travis and Elaine Shamel and their families. Visitation will be held Saturday, February 10 from 11 am – 12:45 pm followed by a service at 1 pm at the Birmingham United Methodist Church located at 15770 Birmingham Highway, Milton, Georgia 30004. A graveside service at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell, Georgia will follow the service. Flowers are accepted or donations may be made in Don’s memory to Birmingham United Methodist Church. Northside Chapel Funeral Directors located at 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, GA 30075 are handling all funeral arrangements.
