Mr. Eugene Dickson Rhodes

On July 30, 2016, Eugene Dickson Rhodes, 89, of Roswell, GA slipped the surly bonds of earth and reached out to touch the face of God. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by family, friends and neighbors. Gene was born on October 31, 1926, the only child of William Patrick and Fannie Mae Fuller Rhodes in the Kirkwood section of Atlanta, Ga. He graduated from Boys High School class of 1944 and entered Georgia Tech. A World War II veteran, he was drafted into the service and went overseas as an infantryman. He was assigned to the Engineer Section Headquarters 8th Army, serving in the Philippines and Japan as a sergeant. After service he returned to Georgia Tech, later graduating in the second class from Southern Technical Institute. For many years he sold equipment and supplies to newspapers and printers throughout the Southeast. The latter part of his career was spent with the Fulton County Public Works Department, where he retired. He married Mildred Aileen Dempsey of Morgan Falls on November 30, 1952 in Roswell, GA. Aileen preceded him to the kingdom of God on November 7, 1998. He is survived by his two loving children, Karen Rhodes Boykin (Thomas) of Roswell, GA and Philip Dempsey Rhodes (Joselyn Cassidy) of Decatur, GA as well as two grandchildren, Kathryn Boykin and Patrick Boykin. He will be missed by his family and many loving friends and neighbors of his close-knit Roswell community. A 59 year resident of Roswell, he was a member of The First Baptist Church of Roswell. He was a Life Member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a Patron Life Member of the National Rifle Association. A memorial service celebrating Gene’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Roswell, 710 Mimosa Boulevard, Roswell GA 30075, on Friday, August 5, 2016 at 2 PM. A visitation with the family will be held at 1 PM before the service in the Church. He will be interred at Green Lawn Cemetery in Roswell following the service.
