Mr. Eugene Anthony "Big Gene" Rice

Eugene Anthony Rice, “Big Gene,” passed unexpectedly on February 3, 2021 in Savannah, GA at the age of 66. Big Gene was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Marguerite Rice and his brother, Edward Rice. His most fulfilling vocation here on Earth was as an adoring husband to Kathy Rice for 43 years, a compassionate father to Christy (husband Robbie) and Gene Rice Jr.( wife Isabel) ,a larger than life grandfather to Will, Reese, Coleman, Whitt, Hayes, and Graham, and a loving brother to his siblings Meg Cole, Mary Anne Armistead, Jackie Rice, Nancy Pryles, Chris Rice, and Pattie Blohm. Big Gene was a modern-day Renaissance man. He was so much to so many. He had a servant’s heart and a giving spirit; he was only a phone call away to lend a hand, and he would at the drop of a hat. He was a lover of the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends. He loved to be on the water, preferably in a boat with a grandkid in tow. He loved seeing God’s creation at work in the wild from the front row. He was a beloved scoutmaster and mentor to a generation of young men. He was a master craftsman in carpentry and had an affinity for the details in both woodworking and in everyday life. His creative spirit will live on in the homes of many friends and family from his gifted creations. He loved a good song and a dance party to go with it. Everyone who knew Big Gene has a memory or a story of a dance floor shared with the big guy. He was authentic and would rather take the time to get it right versus just getting it done. He left no words unsaid and was intentional with those he did use. He loved hard and forgave often. He was always sure to give grace in abundance and look for the good in each person. Big Gene will be forever loved and incredibly missed.
