Joseph Few

Joseph Carroll Few, born in Apalachee, Georgia on February 18, 1924, passed away peacefully at home in Roswell on February 18, 2013, his 89th birthday, with his wife of 65 years by his side. Son of the late Joseph Marion and Henrietta Shockley Few, he was also preceded in death by brother Shockley P. Few, Columbia, SC, and brother and sister-in-law Horace M. and Charlie Harris Few, Duluth, GA. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Jean Gardner Few, Roswell, GA; daughters and son-in-law, Pennee Ann Few McCoy, Draper, UT, Patricia Carol Few and Daniel J. Aamoth, Watkinsville, GA, and Elizabeth Jo Few Gaston, Roswell, GA; grandchildren Joseph Patrick (Gale) McCoy, Keller, TX, Paige McCoy (Jerome) Gardiner, Herriman, UT, Karen Aamoth (Jerel) Dawson, Troutman, NC, Sally Aamoth (Allen) Bray, Atlanta, GA, Lars Joseph Aamoth, Charlotte, NC, Katherine Elizabeth Gaston, Roswell, GA, Joseph Harling (Kelsey) Gaston, Atlanta, GA; great grandchildren Ella Jean McCoy, Keller, TX, Lyndsey Nicole, Andrew James and Jesse Bowman Dawson, Troutman, NC, Natalie Claire Bray, Atlanta, GA, and Greyson Christopher Dudley, Roswell, GA; sister-in-law Dorothy Whitman Few, Columbia, SC; and five nephews. Mr. Few attended the University of Georgia and played trombone in the Dixie Red Coat Marching Band. Enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corp, he flew 13 bombing missions in WWII as a B-24 co-pilot, based in Bari, Italy. After leaving the service, he became an air traffic controller. Within months of his marriage in 1948, he was recalled to active duty and served six months as a controller in the Berlin Airlift; during his off hours, he piloted supply aircraft into East Berlin. He served 33 years with FAA as a controller and air traffic specialist in Miami and Jacksonville, FL, and Atlanta, GA, retiring in 1979. In retirement, he continued his love of flying as a fire patrol pilot for the GA Forestry Commission. He and Shirley traveled around the world and visited all 50 states. Mr. Few was a patriot and an engaged, active citizen, active in many organizations – Optimist Club, Golden Kiwanis and Quiet Birdmen (QB); he was descended from a long line of patriots which includes William Few, signer of the U.S. Constitution for Georgia and U.S. Senator. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church with the Rev. Art Wilder officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
