Mr. Joseph Marion Herbig

HERBIG, Joseph Marion (“Joe”), 60, peacefully passed away on January 7, surrounded by his three favorite girls, from complications stemming from brain cancer, which he bravely battled throughout the last nine months. Joe lived an exemplary life as a loyal husband, father, brother and friend, all with a selfless and kind spirit. Originally from Louisville, KY, he attended Saint Xavier High School and the University of Louisville, from which he received his Masters in Mechanical Engineering. Joe married his high-school sweetheart, Joan, in 1979. They moved to Raleigh, NC, then Lexington, KY before settling in the Atlanta area in 1986. Joe worked for IBM for over 20 years before focusing on raising his daughters, Elizabeth and Katie. Joe spent time over the past two decades managing and selling real estate. Joe and Joan had a special bond and cherished the time they spent together. They loved Louisville Cardinal sports, exercising, music and, most importantly to Joe, spending time with their large extended family and his beloved four-legger, Abby. Joe was an avid fly-fisherman, a master of the Big Green Egg, a quick-witted jokester, and quite possibly the hardest working man in Alpharetta. He enjoyed his food, could clear refrigerators of any leftover backlog, and had an affinity for White Castle hamburgers. He was a sweet man that led by example and was known most notably for his contagious smile and peaceful demeanor. His common sense and strong spirituality allowed him to serve as a mentor to many in the Alpharetta community. To say he was loved by many is an understatement; he was loved by whoever was lucky to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Marie. He is survived by wife Joan (Elbert); daughters Elizabeth Herbig of Atlanta, GA and Katie Sorice (Joe) of Chicago, IL; sisters Marilyn Yurt (Walter) and Mary Ray (Mike) of Louisville, KY, Rita Rose (Marc) of McKinney, TX; brother George of Louisville, KY; and a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews. Joe's life will be celebrated with a visitation at Northside Chapel in Roswell, GA on Thursday, January 12 from 2 to 9 PM (prayer service at 8 PM). A mass will be celebrated at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Alpharetta, GA on Friday, January 13 at 10 AM, followed by a reception at their home in Milton, GA. A celebration will also be held this spring in Louisville, KY. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Brain Tumor Association in Joe’s name.
