Joyce Carter Woodruff

Dr. Joyce C. Woodruff died on August 27, 2011 at the age of 64. She was preceded in death by her father, H. Newton Carter. She is survived by her mother, Floye B. Carter, her brother, F. Dale Carter (Neva), her husband of 43 years, Robert S. Woodruff, a son, John S. Woodruff (Ashlee), a daughter, Traci W. Phillips (Will), and three granddaughters, Baxley and Sadie Woodruff and Emerson Phillips. Dr. Woodruff was a member of the Baha’i Faith and served on the Local Spiritual Assembly, the administrative body for the Baha’i Faith, for over thirty years. Dr. Woodruff was born on November 7, 1946 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She earned a B.S. degree from Louisiana State University, a M.S. from the University of South Alabama, and an Ed.D. from Auburn University. Her life-long career in education began as a middle school science teacher and ended as a professor at the college level. From 1996 until her retirement in 2006, she served as Chairperson of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department at the University of South Alabama. During that time, Dr. Woodruff developed many new courses for the department including online courses. Dr. Woodruff was awarded the 2006 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award for the School of Continuing Education. She was selected for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2004 and 2005. Her professional activities included service on many USA committees, instructor for Freshman Leadership classes, Elderhostel, and the Leadership Institute for Older Adults. She was a member of the Adult Higher Education Alliance, the American Council of Higher Education, the American Counseling Association, and the USA Council on Gerontology. Dr. Woodruff was a Licensed Professional Counselor and served as an officer and board member of the Mobile Licensed Professional Counselor Association for over twenty years. Dr. Woodruff’s volunteer activities included the Faculty Mentoring program, Victim’s Advocate program, GED tutoring, and the AARP Reading Buddy program. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USA Ed Bunnell Scholarship Fund to benefit adult students or the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 4th at 3:00 PM at the Northside Chapel in Roswell, GA.
