Katy Nelle Cochran

Katy Nelle Newton Cochran of Gainesville (formerly of Alpharetta), GA passed away on June 2, 2022 at the age of 80. Katy was born to parents Everett Christian Newton and Nellie Kate Wallace Newton on February 3, 1942. Katy attended Elementary and High School at the original Milton High School site, graduating in 1960. While at Milton, Katy met her future husband and love of her life, Melvin Dean Cochran. She attended Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, graduating in 1964 with a B.S. degree in Education. In 1965, Katy and Melvin Cochran were married, and Katy began her teaching career at Forsyth County H.S. in Cumming, GA where she taught for 3 years. After her children, John Newton Cochran and Mary Dean Cochran, were both of school age, in 1980, Katy resumed her passion for teaching as a Home Economics (Family and Consumer Sciences) instructor at Milton High School. She particularly enjoyed instructing classes in Child Development and Interior Design, and she also excelled in teaching Sewing and Cooking with both skill and wit, to which many of her former students will attest. Katy retired from Milton in 2002. Katy was an avid reader and bridge player, a loving wife, mother and friend. She was the consummate cook and interior decorator, offering advice and assistance and providing food for numerous friends and family members. The Hunt Club was frequently gifted with her special lemon pound cake. She consistently hosted family celebrations and holidays with grace and ease. Katy is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Dean Cochran and her daughter, Mary Dean Cochran. Surviving family members include son and daughter-in-law, John Cochran and Angela Cochran; granddaughter, Katy Cochran Gross and husband, Matt Gross; grandsons, John Cochran Jr. and Nick Crayne; great granddaughter, Maddie Gross; sister, Mary Newton Gaut; niece, Beth Elliott; seven cousins and their families. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM at Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory. The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM in the chapel at Northside Chapel Funeral Director and Crematory with a private graveside service to follow.
