Nancy Martha Wolfe Bevers

Nancy Martha Wolfe Bevers was born November 16, 1944, in Savannah, Georgia, the beloved daughter of Hennie and Edward Grayson Wolfe. The oldest of four children and the only girl among three brothers, Nancy grew up in Savannah and later moved to the Isle of Hope. It was there that the foundation of a faith that would define her life began to take root. When her family moved and she faced the uncertainty of attending a new high school, Nancy prayed about the transition. The once-apprehensive new girl would later be voted “Most Popular”—an early reflection of the warmth, kindness and genuine interest in others that would characterize her throughout her life. Her faith was nurtured at Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah. She also loved the beach and, like many girls of her generation, Elvis Presley—enough to secretly write his name on the bottoms of her feet. At just nineteen, Nancy married the love of her life, Terry. His career as a traveling salesman took the young couple from Georgia to Arkansas and then Oklahoma City. Their son, Michael, was born in Atlanta, and their daughter, Kathryn (Katie), was born in Oklahoma three months prematurely. Doctors offered little hope that their tiny daughter would survive the night. Nancy called her mother in Atlanta, who attended First Alliance Church. It was a Sunday evening, and the church gathered to pray for the baby hundreds of miles away. Kathryn (Katie) survived and thrived. Nancy told that story throughout her life, always referring to Katie as her “miracle baby.” She would also say that it was through that experience that her own faith deepened. What began in Savannah became an abiding trust in God that would sustain her through every season that followed. Nancy and her family eventually returned to Atlanta, where she devoted herself to creating a home centered on faith, family and hospitality. She loved being a homemaker and excelled at it, although she readily admitted that much of what she did so beautifully had been learned through determination and hard work. She taught herself to sew and became an accomplished seamstress, making countless beautiful things for her family, including her daughter’s homecoming and prom dresses and, ultimately, her wedding gown. Nancy cooked, gardened, decorated and entertained with a seemingly effortless grace. Friends could drop by unexpectedly and somehow nothing was ever out of place. Terry was known for spontaneously bringing people home for dinner—and occasionally inviting them to stay considerably longer—and Nancy simply made room. Their home in Tucker became a gathering place for family and friends. Nancy had a particular gift for recognizing what was happening in the lives of others, whether there was something to celebrate or a difficult season to walk through. Someone was having a baby, opening a restaurant, writing a book, beginning a new chapter or simply struggling through one, and Nancy’s instinct was to show up—to encourage, support, celebrate or simply help carry the load. Her hospitality was never about impressing people. It was about caring for them. For 30 years, Nancy served as executive assistant to Ravi Zacharias, managing a demanding schedule of international travel, speaking engagements, annual worldwide conferences and correspondence. She approached her professional responsibilities with the same excellence and attention to detail she brought to everything she did, while always keeping Terry, their marriage and raising Michael and Katie as the priority of her life. She lived the words of Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” Later, Nancy and Terry moved to seven acres in North Milton. What initially meant a difficult commute became one of the greatest blessings of their lives. There was a barn, a beautiful garden, dogs and barn cats, and plenty of room for grandchildren to grow, explore and make memories. Nancy poured herself into that home, just as she had every home before it. After Terry’s death, leaving that home was especially difficult. By then, Nancy was also beginning her journey with dementia, and the years that followed gradually made her world smaller. Yet something remarkable remained unchanged: Nancy remained grateful. Even when a new place did not quite feel like home, she would remind others how fortunate someone would be to live there. As the possessions and activities that once filled her days fell away, she kept close the things that mattered most to her—her Bible and books that encouraged her walk with the Lord. In the end, her faith was not merely one part of Nancy’s life. It was its source. Nancy loved to read, to learn, and especially to talk and engage with people. She had little interest in television or social media, choosing instead to fill her mind and heart elsewhere. Her dear friend Nancy once described her simply: “She was never not walking in the Spirit.” Nancy believed the best about people. She was slow to judge and often reminded her daughter, “You don’t know the whole story. Most people are carrying something.” Her life reflected the love described in 1 Corinthians 13—patient, kind, hopeful, enduring and always inclined to believe the best in others. Nancy is survived by her brothers, Dan (Linda) and Ned (Maryanne); her children, Michael (Becky) and Kathryn (Chris); and her beloved grandchildren, Hudson, Bailey and Grayson. She was also a devoted lover of the many dogs who were part of her family through the years, with special mention to her beloved Cracker (deceased) and Maddie, who supported her tremendously these past few years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Terry, with whom she is now joyfully reunited; and her brother, Bill. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men that may see your moral excellence and your praiseworthy, noble and good deeds, and recognize and honor and praise and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.” Nancy’s light shone in a thousand ordinary and extraordinary ways: in a beautifully sewn dress, an open door, a meal around the table, a tended garden, an encouraging word, a prayer offered in faith, a marriage cherished, a child loved, a grandchild welcomed, and a Bible kept close until the very end. Her life reminds us that legacy is not simply what we leave for others. It is what we leave in them. And Nancy’s light remains in all who knew and loved her. Guests are welcome to remain for all or any portion of the gathering as we remember her with the warmth, fellowship and hospitality she so loved. For those wishing to send flowers, the family would especially welcome garden-style arrangements in vases or containers suitable for tabletops, which will be used throughout the gathering in Nancy’s memory. At a future date, the family will gather privately at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia, where Nancy will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Terry, and near her mother and father.
