Mr. Peter T. Bernot

Peter Thomas Bernot died peacefully at his home in Rowell, GA on November 1, 2017 with his family by his side. He was born on December 21, 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, the only child of Lithuanian immigrants, Peter Augustus Bernot and his wife Helen Oleski Bernot. He served in the Army in active duty for the infantry in Europe and the Philippines from 1944-1946 and returned to Philadelphia to attend Drexel Institute of Technology where he graduated with an engineering degree in 1949. His fascination with airplanes and space flight led him to Langley Field in Virginia where he took a job as an Aerospace Engineer for NACA (later known as NASA). Throughout his 37 year career at NASA, he worked in the performance analysis section primarily testing space shuttle models in the wind tunnel. Pete was passionate about model planes and rockets all of his life and he was fortunate to have a career that complemented his hobby. Pete met Charlotte Maria Carroll from Oxford, NC at NASA and they married in 1958. They lived in Hampton, VA and have three children, Michael, Linda, and Nancy. Pete was very dedicated to his family and passed on to his children his love of aeronautics and fishing. Before his retirement from NASA in 1988, Pete and Maria moved to Yorktown, VA where he loved fishing in the York River. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and he could be found at the Yorktown Battlefield on holidays teaching them about rocketry. In 2011, he and Maria moved to Roswell, GA to live near their family. Pete was an active member of the Catholic Church throughout his life and was a parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Alpharetta, GA. He died in his home in Roswell after a valiant fight with cancer. Pete is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maria Bernot, and their three children, Michael Peter Bernot of Atlanta, GA, Linda Bernot Dugan of San Jose, CA, and Nancy Maria Bernot of Vancouver, B.C. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Charlotte Bernot, Emily Dugan, Annie Bernot, Matthew Dugan, Peter Bernot, Virginia Bernot, and Robert Bernot. A private service will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Alpharetta, GA at a date to be determined. Burial services will be performed in Oxford, NC.
