Mr. Jay Stewart Smith

September 26, 1969 – November 25, 2016 MARIETTA, GA Jay Stewart Smith, age 47, entered into rest on November 25, 2016. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, first child and only son to AJ and JoAnn Smith. At a young age, his family moved to the Miami area, followed by Jacksonville. In the midst of his high school years, Jay’s family moved to the Roswell, Georgia area, where he graduated from Lassiter High School. Jay went on to attend the University of Georgia, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and furthered his education at Kennesaw State University with a Master’s in Business Administration, specializing in finance. Jay’s first and only job was working for AT&T (formerly BellSouth) for 18 years. He excelled in school, work, and sports, making lifelong friends every step of the way. Jay was a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed in 2005 with acute myelogenous leukemia and because he had a particularly difficult mutation, required a bone marrow transplant via his only sibling, Julie, who was a perfect match. Despite having related health issues, Jay continued to lead an active life, even competing in USATF (track and field) events in the summer of 2016. A recent illness progressed to metabolic acidosis. A devoted father, Jay’s sons were his first priority – helping them with school, coaching and taking them to practice, and in all things, showing them by example how to be upstanding, respectful young men. Jay’s favorite things were his family, home, exercising, watching football and rugby, woodworking, working in the yard and being outside, eating ice cream, and the family cat. The Smith’s are members of Roswell Presbyterian Church, who have supported them in many life events. In all things, Jay was competent, organized, and perceptive. It is difficult to summarize the life and personality of such an amazing human being in so short a space. He had much more to give and will be missed greatly by all of those who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Anneke Brandsma Smith, and their two sons, Tate Jackson, 13, and Tyler Christian, 10; his parents, AJ Smith, Jr. and JoAnn Babb Smith; and his sister and brother-in-law, Julie Ann and Scott Carpenter, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Northside Chapel located at 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, Georgia, 770-645-1414. The memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Roswell Presbyterian Church. Dr. Bill Nisbet and Dr. Joseph Conyers will officiate. Burial arrangements are being taken care of by Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City, Tennessee, on Sunday, December 4, 2016. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Click Funeral Home Chapel for a short visitation at 1:00 p.m., followed by a gravesite service at Lakeview Cemetery.
