Kathryn Ann McClain Montgomery

Kathryn Ann (McClain) Montgomery of Alpharetta, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on August 2, 2007, following a courageous struggle with metastatic cancer at Hospice Atlanta Center. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. Kathryn was born in Hereford, Texas, on October 19, 1943. She graduated from Hereford High School, Baylor University School of Nursing, and the University of Minnesota (MS in Nursing). Following her graduation from Baylor, she served a two-year term as a Missionary Journeyman in the Baptist Hospital in Mbeya, Tanzania, East Africa. After her graduation from the University of Minnesota, she served as an Instructor of Nursing at the University and later served as Assistant Professor of Nursing at Duke University in Durham, NC. In addition, she later served as Nursing Services Supervisor at Delaware Hospice and afterward in the Profession Information Center for DuPont Pharmaceuticals. She retired from professional activities in 2000. Kathryn was the beloved wife of W. Charles (Charlie) Montgomery for almost 39 years, having married shortly after her return from Tanzania in 1968. Together, they lived in Minneapolis, MN; Durham, NC; Newark, DE; Wadsworth, OH; Springfield, VA; Wilmington, DE; Boyds, MD; and Alpharetta, GA during their years of marriage with more than 24 years in the Wilmington, DE area. Kathryn was a loving woman with a strong faith which she practiced in her relationships with others. She and her husband were long-time members of Ogletown Baptist Church, Newark, Delaware, where Kathryn enjoyed teaching generations of 4- and 5-year-olds in Mission Friends, as well as helping her husband lead adult Bible Study classes. In addition, she served the church on several committees and as a mentor for new believers. Since their move to Georgia, she and her husband have been members of Crabapple First Baptist Church in Alpharetta where they lead an adult Bible Study. In addition to her work professionally and in her church, Kathryn also enjoyed cooking, sewing, and quilting, but her favorite title was Mom, and recently, Grandmom. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Amy Miles of Talbott, TN; Lisa Pierce of Lexington, SC; and Brian Montgomery of Potomac Falls, VA; two sons-in-law, Nathan Miles and Wayne Pierce; and two granddaughters, Megan Miles and Kate Pierce. In addition, she is survived by three sisters, Neta Harrell and her husband Rev. Davis Harrell of Monticello, CA; Joyce Lewellyn and her husband Pat Lewellyn of Nampa, ID; and Darleen Truman and her husband Duane Truman of Amarillo, TX; a brother, Dr. Donald Troy Moore of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Dawson, husband of her late sister Alyce Dawson, of Shawnee, OK. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Vinita McClain; her father, Thomas McClain; and her brother, Harold Dean Moore. Kathryn's faith and loving spirit are an example to her family and all who knew her. A celebration of Kathryn's life and faith will be held at Crabapple First Baptist Church, 12760 Birmingham Highway (Hwy 372), Alpharetta, GA 30004, on Sunday, August 5, at 3:00 pm. Burial will be at Crabapple Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 5, at Crabapple First Baptist Church from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.
