Nancy L. Poe

Nancy L. Poe, age 74, of Roswell, Georgia formerly of Joplin, Missouri, passed away December 5, 2010, after a short illness. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Missouri Southern State College, Joplin, Missouri, in 1971, and summa cum laude with a Master of Science degree in Accounting from Kansas State College of Pittsburg, Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1972. She then began a long and rewarding career in auditing for the Federal Department of Health and Human Services. Her career started as auditor in the Bureau of Indian Affairs, based in Oklahoma City, and advanced to the post of Deputy Director of Regional Audits based in Washington, DC. In 1995 she was awarded the Assistant Secretary Outstanding Achievement Award, one of five given out nationwide. She came to Atlanta to work with the Region IV (Atlanta) Federal Office of Child Support Enforcement Audit Team, retiring in 1996. Upon retirement she began a career as Senior Consultant for the Center for Support of Families, working with state governments in the area of child support enforcement. She put away her work life in 1998 to concentrate on her first love, needle work. Nancy was a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and Embroiderers’ Guild of America, belonging to seven chapters across the nation. She held various offices and was active in workshops and seminars with each group, and was proud to be an honorary “Kentucky Colonel.” Her cross stitch and needle point pieces were intricate and meticulously rendered, and garnered numerous ribbons and awards. Most recently she was awarded the Hilton Stitch Award, and will be highlighted in the January, 2011 issue of Needle Pointers magazine. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold Poe, by her parents, Charles and Juanita Crossley, and by her sister Patricia Swift. She is survived by her daughters, Robin Manley (husband Neil) and Sunny Bates, step-son Don Poe (wife Nelly), 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and her sister Carolyne Kalcevic and family, and a host of close friends. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 1:00pm at Green Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Ken May officiating.
